Survive The Free Porn Arms Race

The other day I was reading the boards and reading a lot of posts about the doom and gloom of the industry. It seems that there are some people that think the industry is about to collapse and others that are doing just find. It occurred to me that we have created many of our own problems due to our free porn arms race that has exploded in our faces.

I was a kid right at the end of the cold war where the US and were both racing to see who could get more nuclear bombs. The accumulation of these bombs made it clear that neither could attack or we would both be blown to bits. Porn is kind of the same thing, only maybe we actually fired the bombs.

It all started with a link site. They linked to warning pages of free sites. Then someone decided that wasn't good enough so they created the TGP and linked right to the galleries and got some great traffic. Someone then decided that wasn't enough so they created the MGP linked right to movie galleries and got even more traffic. That still wasn't enough for some so they created the tube site and gave away full length movies that are right there on the page so you don't even have to leave the site to get them. And they got tons of traffic.

The problem is, now they have fired the bomb. They have taught the visitors that there is more than enough free porn out there so they don't have to worry about joining a site. Unlike the cold war where the build up caused us to cease hostilities, the arms race to give away porn has exploded in our faces and caused us to lose sales. I still think the tube site is a business model born to fail and they will eventually have to downsize the size of the clips they offer, but until then they are training people where and how to get tons of free porn and making them feel that joining a site is something they don’t need to do.

But there is good news. If there is no money to be made, porn online would disappear. People figure out everyday how to make money. You can’t just give an entire member’s area and expect to profit so people will figure things out and make money off these newly trained surfers or the sites will just disappear and less free porn will be available. Sometimes burning a field turns out to be the best thing you can do.

My advice? Do what you would after a fallout. Build your shelter. Work hard to carve out your niche in the world and let the other people fight. You focus on making money and growing your network of sites. You work on getting a stable amount of traffic from many different sources and let the other people argue over what to do with the tens of thousands of freeloads. Don't worry about figuring out how to get 100,000 visitors and convert them at 1:10,000. Instead, worry about how to get 1,000 quality visitors and convert them like crazy. Discover the niches that the tube sites don't smother and work in them. Consider yourself the simple farmer after the nuclear fallout. You may only have a few acres, but it is green, fertile and grows some great crops and owning it is considerably better than owning thousands of acres of useless, radioactive wasteland.
