| Camera Phone Porn and Privacy Issues |
It’s amazing to see how far technology has come since cell phones were first introduced to us in the 80s. Back then, cell phones were huge boxes for the car or handhelds that were the size and weight of a baby. In those days, cell phones were incredibly expensive to use and their capabilities were extremely limited. Today, cell phones are amazing tools that can easily fit in your pocket, they weigh next to nothing, and they can be used to do just about anything. Cell phones now have the ability to surf the Internet, be an address book, send email, download and play music, act as an organizer and planner, play games, send text messages, and even take pictures and record videos. It is this image capturing functionality that has brought cell phone technology into dangerous territory. Cell phones are no longer merely communication tools but are also now a means to invade the privacy of others.
The camera function on cell phones truly is an amazing idea if used properly. It’s a great way to capture those surprise moments that make great pictures. It works as a handy replacement to carrying around a wallet full of pictures of friends and family. It is also a quick and efficient method to share special moments with those people that you are close to. However, the camera capability also has a more sinister alternative function. Camera phones are now growing in popularity as voyeur tools. People are using them as a spying device in locker rooms, restrooms, and other public areas, where people’s privacy should be protected. Camera phones are also being used to get upskirt shots of unsuspecting females in all sorts of public places like nightclubs, malls, and even in schools. Some camera phone pornographers have even gone as far as to secretly take nude shots of girls when they are passed out, asleep, or even during sex. They then post these pictures or video clips on porn websites without the girl’s knowledge or permission.
In Europe, camera phones have been around for much longer than they have in North America. Over there, people are well aware of the dirtier uses that camera phones can have. About a quarter of the men that I encountered over there had camera phones with at least one dirty picture on it that they had taken, either with or without the girl’s permission. A Swedish guy that played on my husband’s hockey team took all sorts of nasty pictures of an unsuspecting drunk girl that he slept with one night and then preceded to send them to all the guys on the team. It made me absolutely sick to see one person take such advantage of another person’s privacy. This sort of invasion of privacy and illegal camera phone pornography is something that we will only see increase as camera phones become more popular. That is, unless something can be done about it.
In the United States, something is being done about illegal camera phone pornography. The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously supported legislation that will make the use of camera phones in places where privacy needs to be respected, illegal. Examples of the types of places that are being targeted are locker rooms, tanning salons, and bedrooms. The bill also makes taking any unwanted or invasive pictures and posting them on the Internet, punishable by law. Violators of these laws will face heavy fines and up to one year in prison. Experts predict that in five years there will be more than one billion camera phones in use worldwide, so it is extremely important for lawmakers to set the boundaries now, before misuse gets out of control. These laws, although a great step, may not be the only solution to getting rid of invasive camera phone porn.
There is another privacy protection solution in the works right now. A company called Iceberg Systems is testing a product called Safe Haven, which could automatically switch off camera phones. It combines software loaded into the phone, with hardware transmitters and when the camera phone is taken into an area containing the Safe Haven transmitter, the phone will be instructed to turn off the imaging portion. This technology is an amazing idea, but it will take time before we see it become commonplace. It would be a great product to install in change rooms, public restrooms, offices, and other areas where privacy could be invaded, but it could be years before we will see this type of technology in these places.
It really is a shame that people have to abuse the breakthrough technology of being able to take pictures with your cell phone. It is always the minority of perpetrators that have to ruin it for the rest of us. There really is nothing wrong with taking nude pictures with a camera phone as long as you have the person’s consent. It can actually even add to the passion of intimate moments. However, it is completely wrong to take pictures without the person’s permission, and even worse to share them with others or post them on the Internet. We as adult webmasters can help put an end to the invasion of privacy by camera phones. If we are aware of any webmaster that is posting camera phone content that is illegal, then it is our duty to report it. We cannot afford to tarnish our image any further by harboring or supporting individuals who violate the privacy of others. |
