| Canada: Becoming the Northern Porn Hub |
During the Toronto International Film Festival, the city often gets dubbed in the media as being “Hollywood North” and for very good reason. Movie stars, musicians and celebrities all flock to Toronto to take in all that it has to offer in the form of entertainment. In the past ten years, the city has really put itself on the world map as being a Mecca for business, entertainment, fashion, food, and of course fun. Like Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are also gaining recognition as being modern cities that are centers of activity. It seems that the larger Canadian cities are starting to edge themselves out to compete with the big American cities and they are fighting the battle on more than one playing field.
Not only are Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver becoming entertainment and business hubs north of the border, but they are also emerging as online adult entertainment centers as well. When the online adult entertainment industry was in its infancy and development stages, it was, like most sectors relating to technology, centered mainly in California. When I started in this business in Toronto, I would go into the office at like 11am but I would stay until around 7pm, mainly because the majority of my customers and suppliers were based on the west coast of the United States. Even today, we still primarily associate adult entertainment with places like Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas, and various cities in Florida, but we also are starting to consider Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver as being growing players.
Back when I was starting out in the business in Toronto, all of the industry conventions and trade shows were held in the U.S. cities mentioned above. Any time that we wanted to enjoy some face-to-face networking; we would have to hop on a plane and endure a four-hour flight at least. These trade shows, conventions and gatherings would also end up costing the company a fortune when you figured in the flight, hotel, meals, and trade show materials, not to mention that dollar exchange which is not very favorable for Canadians. It usually ended up where would spend way more money than we would bring in with new business from the trip.
However, over the past couple of years, the Canadian companies have been growing and many new ones have started up, which has contributed to a very large online adult entertainment presence north of the border. Because of this, there arose a need for there to be conventions and gatherings that would allow Canadian Webmasters to network with each other as well as give American Webmasters a chance to come up to the land of beer and beavers for some good old fashioned fun. The show that was a smashing success in Toronto and is now getting set to hit Vancouver is the Webmaster Summit. It offers many of the features as the conventions in Vegas such as seminars, industry debates, round table discussions, parties, dinners and more, except that it is located just a little further north. For more information on Webmaster Summit, please visit their site. We have also seen shows such as Everything to Do With Sex hit cities across Canada and we have been witness to webmaster gatherings from Montreal right across to Vancouver.
If you have not already attended a Webmaster convention or gathering in Canada, you may be curious as to which of the online adult entertainment companies that you are familiar with, are actually Canadian. I was actually wondering this myself and so I set out to compile a list of online adult entertainment companies that are located in Canada. I apologize if your company is not listed here, but here are some of the ones that I came up with:
Gamma Cash, CashPartner, Spread4U/Stroke4U, Python / Dollarmachine, SexPromote, SlickCash, CupidCams, Porn Profit, MegaPornBucks, Sweet Entertainment Group, Join Right Now, Orgasm Cash, Cyber2000, Brain Cash, Snobbz, SleazyDream, Leading Edge Cash, Max Candy, Xamo, Sex Inc, Nexpectation, Naughty Niche, Ego Photography, WRP Productions, JACT Content, Content Guys, CoxCash, LargeCash, WebDream
As you can see from the list, there are some pretty large adult entertainment companies that are headquartered in the Great White North. These days it is possible for Canadian Webmasters to conduct business with each other as well as have American Webmasters come to them. The great thing about this business is that it is almost borderless. I stress the word “almost”, because recently Visa tried to put up borders by making it very difficult for Canadian Webmasters to be able to continue running their businesses as they were. Visa actually tried to force the Canadian businesses to Americanize themselves by incorporating in the United States.
Aside from the whole Visa fiasco, there are definitely pros and cons to running your online adult entertainment business from Canada. One of the benefits of being a Canadian Webmaster is that you are usually making your profits in US dollars which translates into much more Canadian dollars. One of the downfalls to being a Canadian Webmaster is that you are still living in a different country than a majority of your customers. Even though Canada is slowly becoming an adult entertainment center, it still has a little ways to go. |
