Trading Expertise
Do you ever wish that you could be a super-being that is all knowing and can do everything and anything? I know that I do. Last week I was trying to sketch a diagram and I realized just what a terrible artist I would make; I really struggled with it. My sister, on the other hand, is very creative and has the amazing ability to be able to draw with incredible accuracy, so I am guessing that trait does not run in the family. It really got me to thinking that I should get my sister to draw my diagram for me, but of course she would want something in return. She had a marketing proposal that she was working on and of course she needed some help from her big sister who knows a little something about marketing and writing. So, it seemed that we had a perfect solution. She would assist me with the drawing of my diagram and in return, I would help her out with her marketing proposal. This was a beneficial trade-off of expertise for both of us. She used her artistic abilities to help me out and I used my marketing knowledge to help her out. In the end, we were both farther ahead because we had relied on one another’s areas of expertise. This kind of trade-off works in many situations, but I feel that it works particularly well in the adult online industry between webmasters.

There are so many talented and skilled individuals working in the online adult industry. A select number of these webmasters are “jacks of all trades” or the type of people that are able to do everything on their own such as design, make content, market, write, network, etc.; everything needed to be successful in this business. There are also a good many people that can afford to have people do all of this stuff for them. However, not all of us are born with all of these natural abilities, nor do we have the time to master every skill. We also may not have enough cash lying around to pay people large sums of money to do all of it for us. There are a large percentage of small webmasters who require services and/or products that they cannot do on their own or afford to have people do it for them. These are the people that really benefit from this type of trade-off situation.

Let’s say that you are a small time content producer and you have an amazing collection of high quality, fresh material. However, you do not have a great website in which you can showcase what you have to offer, and you do not have the ability to create one yourself, nor do you have the money to pay someone to do it for you. What do you do? You may not have money, but you do have something else that you can offer someone in return for a great site. The trade-off is a simple solution. All you have to do is find a talented site designer that is in need of some content and commence the trade-off. It is a win-win situation.

So, how do you find people that are willing to trade off their products and/or services? You would be surprised just how many Webmasters there are out there that would be willing to enter into a trade-off kind of situation. A quick and easy way is to post a message with your proposal to the popular Webmaster boards. Those individuals that are interested in what you have to offer will contact you and you can work out the details privately. Another way to find prospective trade-off partners is by word of mouth. It is always beneficial if someone you are used to doing business with can make a good recommendation. It is a little better than entering blind into an agreement with someone of whose reputation you know nothing about. Finding people who are in the same boat as you and who are willing to trade expertise is the easy part. There are many people in this industry who are incredibly talented and can do whatever it is that they do, very well. The hardest part with trading expertise is setting up the exchange so that it is fair for both parties.

Some of the biggest dramas that occur in this business are when two parties enter into an agreement and then one party does not fulfill their end of the bargain. If you are going to enter into an agreement of trade-off with someone, even though there is no monetary payment involved, you need to be sure that you set a guideline prior to either party commencing their part of the deal. It is a very good idea, especially if the value of the goods and/or services being traded is of high value that you write up a simple outline of what each party needs to do, and the timeline in which in needs to be done. You should then both sign and date this to make it a contract, in order to protect both parties.

Trading expertise with other webmasters is a great idea, especially if you are just starting out. It is a great way to get your name out and for people to get a chance to see what you have to offer. Once you get established, then you will want to focus more on making the big profits by having people pay for your services instead of trading for them.
