Learn something every day

Posted on June 2nd, 2008

The old saying "learn something new everyday" may sound like a cliche to many, but it really is a worthwhile thing to think about. For example, just today I figured out how to add an iframe with some pics into the sidebar of one of my blogs. It may not be a big thing, but it is pretty cool and if it draws hits I will do it on all of my blogs and it could earn me some nice cash.

You don’t have to learn something big. There is no need to be Stephen Hawking and solve the problems of the universe everyday, but just learning a new shortcut in a program or a new way to code something or a cool new tool in Photoshop can make your life better, easier and more profitable. So when you are faced with a question, don’t just put it off because you don’t want to be bothered, tackle it. I might just end up being an easy question to answer and it could help your business out down the road.

As the cartoon GI Joe that I watched growing up used to say, " Now I know, and knowing is half the battle."

Get back to basics

Posted on May 28th, 2008

I have been reading a lot recently about how tube sites and recession and more competition are driving people out of business or seeing a slowdown in business. I’m sure there is some truth to this. There is more free porn out there today than ever before but I maintain that ultimately the tube sites are a business model that is born to fail. When or if that happens doesn’t  change today and next week. Most of us are pretty much helpless to make huge changes in the industry, but there are things you can do.

1. Ignore the doom and gloom of the boards. Instead focus on working. I have found the times that were slow for me in the past were times when I was slacking off and was more worried about drama than work. If I saw other people complain about slow sales I started to complain then I would spend more time on the boards than on my projects and I would see a slowdown.

2. Do what you know. If you are good at something keep doing it and focus on making yourself better.

3. Innovate for yourself.  Don’t worry about copying other people and doing what they are doing. Instead try to make something for yourself that works for you. For example a lot of people use very heavily graphic intense tgp galleries. It is the new wave. Me? I use basic text and a simple layout and it works really well. It makes my galleries look less like everyone else’s and in my opinion it is less intrusive to the visitor. My galleries look less like a sales pitch which I feel helps people feel more comfortable clicking the links.

Worry about the things you can change. Don’t worry about the things you have no control over and stay on task. Let other people predict the death of online porn, when the sky falls and the collapse of the world.

More Backlash For Tube Sites

Posted on March 29th, 2008

There have been a couple of very interesting events in the last few days in regards to Tube sites. Gallery Traffic Services started selling ad spots for Xtube a “tube” site that often posts full 20-30 minute and longer videos. These types of sites have caused a lot of controversy and I still believe they are a business model that is born to fail. That sais as soon as GTS announced they were selling ad spots on these sites there was a pretty big backlash with several people announcing they would no longer buy submit passes or gallery spots from GTS and would instead deal directly with the site owners. If these people really hold true to their word it could prove to be a real statement of how unhappy people are with tube sites.

Another interesting tube related item is that that news has gone out that redtube is for sale. It was rumored to be offered for sale last year at a price in the area of 1 million dollars and they got no takers. I would be interested to see what they want for it now.

I have always said that the tube sites will begin having a real problem making money and that trouble will lead to them needing to dramatically change their business model or cause them to go out of business. I think these new developments are some evidence that I might be correct about this. More on these topics as I find them out.

RIP Texasdreams

Posted on March 28th, 2008

Today was a sad day for a lot of adult webmasters. Texasdreams, a webmaster who was involved with Home Grown Video for a long time was found dead in his apartment. A while back he said he was not feeling well and left the company. He believed, in part, that the stress of the business was hurting his health and he needed to take care of himself.

For a long time nobody heard from him and he seemed to have just disappeared. That is not uncommon – especially in the adult biz, but even those that knew him privately said they could not get in touch with him. The manager of the apartment complex he was living in grew worried when they couldn’t contact him so they contacted Home Grown and learned of his health issue. The manger and a member of the Home Grown staff went into the apartment and found him. He appears to have been dead for around a month.

I met Mark AKA Texasdreams a couple of times and knew him as a good, honest guy who worked hard and was a straight shooter. I don’t know what saddens me more. That he died, or that it took a month before anyone knew he was dead. I know he didn’t have a lot of friends of family, but I had no idea he was that out of contact with people.

My condolences go out to his friends, co-workers and colleagues and any unknown family that he may have.

Hot off the press. Deepak and his company Deecash have just announced that they have purchased Extreme Pay Checks and Rage Cash. These are two companies that have been around for a little while and have grown fast. It looks like Dee is on a roll and is gobbling up more and more real estate. They are a good company and should help these two programs continue to grow and make money.
